In the crystalline caves beneath an Italian lake, the fossil of a clawed creature seemingly older than the earth has been disinterred. In the sands of the Judaean desert, a tattered parchment, lost but legendary, has been discovered.
One reveals the secrets of Heaven. One foretells an impending Hell.
Together they have unleashed an abominable power into the world. And deciphering their message has been left to paleontologist Carter Cox—a man of science whose faith in the empirical is about to be shaken by forces of evil beyond imagining.

I thought the idea of the story was well executed and well written for genre fiction. Good build-up, good suspense. I would have enjoyed a bit more exposition on the antagonist, his motivation, his history, particularly at the denouement. I feel it would have made for a richer story. There was very ripe ground for a lot of creativity there that went unexplored. The very end was tied up a bit too neatly, in terms of explaining how certain characters fared. That said, I'm not disappointed and I would read another of Masello's (sp?) books. As time goes on, I'm sure they'll keep getting better.
