When Sinners Say "I Do‪"‬

I placed When Sinners Say "I Do" on my Amazon Wish List after reading a Tim Challies' review in which he stated this is perhaps the best marriage book he has ever read. I had no excuse to purchase the Kindle book once I saw it under $2. It was released in the summer of 2007 and consists of less than two hundred pages. When Sinners Say "I Do" is organized in the following manner:

The author, Pastor Dave Harvey, has written a few books, has served in pastoral ministry for over 25 years, and has been married for more than 30 years. Harvey writes candidly in When Sinners Say "I Do" that the problem in marriages is our sinful hearts; however, he doesn't stop there. He also points us to the beautiful solution, the Good News of Jesus Christ. When Sinners Say "I Do" can be easily understood to those new to the faith yet strike straight at the heart of those who have been walking faithfully with the Lord for many years. Humor is tastefully sprinkled throughout this biblical book. I found chapter eight to be particularly insightful and used much of it for a devotional I led on encouragement. The chapter on sex was done in good taste. I'm thankful to have finally read When Sinners Say "I Do", and I wholeheartedly recommend it to any Christian regardless of whether you have recently gotten engaged or you have been married for a good number of years.

Super book. Easy to read, yet very thought provoking.
If you love your spouse, or want to love your spouse more, then this is a great starting place with lots of practical application.
Best in a group, but worth while on an individual bases also.

As someone who is going through a season of restoration in my own twenty-year marriage, this book really hit home. It was insightful, deeply biblically rooted, and opened my eyes up to a lot—especially in terms of forgiveness.

Dave Harvey doesn't sugarcoat marriage. He approaches it with this refreshing honesty that acknowledges we're all sinners married to sinners, and that the only way through that reality is the gospel. That framing alone shifted something in me. It's not about finding the perfect spouse or fixing your partner—it's about two broken people leaning on grace and doing the hard work together.

There are stories in here that really made me see how small my problems are. Hearing what other couples have walked through and how God has shown up in their marriages gave me a lot of perspective. It's humbling in the best way. Harvey weaves together real-life marriage struggles with solid biblical teaching in a way that feels practical, not preachy.

The biggest takeaway for me was the reminder that the finished work of Christ is the highest price and the highest form of forgiveness. If that's the standard, if that's what I've been given, then I need to extend that same grace to my spouse. It was a stark reminder that I need to do better. And let God work.

This isn't a quick-fix marriage book. It's not a list of tips and tricks to make your spouse do what you want. It's deeper than that—it's about seeing your marriage through the lens of the gospel and letting that change how you show up, how you forgive, and how you love. If you're in a hard season, or even if you're not, this book is worth your time.
