Set in 19th-century Bavaria, Jae-Jones's debut tells the tale of 18-year-old Liesl Vogler, an innkeeper's daughter who dreams of being a famous composer but is resigned to a life of minding her siblings and helping her mother run the family business. When the Goblin King abducts Liesl's younger sister, Kath , Liesl travels to the Underground and secures Kath 's release by agreeing to marry the King in her stead. Freed from her earthly responsibilities, Liesl can finally dedicate herself to her music, with the Goblin King serving as both collaborator and muse. But as she falls in love and finds her voice, the Underground begins to drain her life force, and soon Liesl is faced with difficult decisions. While Jae-Jones writes beautifully about the magic of love, the power of music, and the importance of free will, she gives short shrift to the more elementary aspects of her story. The plot meanders, the stakes are ill-defined, and the characters lack depth and verisimilitude, keeping the book from reaching its full potential. Ages 12 up.

Elegant Prose and Mesmerizing Story
I voluntarily received an ARC of Wintersong by S. Jae Jones in exchange for an honest review.
I was very hesitant when I started reading Wintersong, because the idea of a book surrounding goblins did not sound appealing to me. I'm glad I kept an open mind about Wintersong because this book is mesmerizing. Jones's prose has an elegant feeling to it and really brings the story to life.
The story was a little confusing in the beginning, but all of my questions were answered as the story progressed and more details were revealed. I became frustrated with Elisabeth at times, but I understood her fierce desire to protect her family and take care of them at all costs.
Even though Wintersong has a magical and fairy tale like feeling to it, I would say this story is suited for readers on the older end of the young adult spectrum and older.

I loved this book, i picked it up and didn’t put it down for three days. I didn’t think that a story with goblins in it would be as interesting but this book proved me wrong and I can’t wait to read the second one and see Elisabeth’s next journey

This is possibly my favorite book. I’m restless thinking about it. If you’re a fan of Labyrinth you will definitely love this masterpiece.
