Delightful early entry in the Ethshar series
Lawrence Watt-Evans delightful Ethshar series: lighthearted, but with heartfelt and believable characters, in a well realized multi-discipline magic universe, and engaging stand-alone stories well ensconced in a wonderful timeline with airtight continuity.
This early entry in the series stars a generally like-able screw-up, who connived his way into an apprenticeship with a wizard too old for an apprentice while he himself was a few years too old to be an apprentice. One all-too timely death and soon we have a protagonist who technically is a wizard but really knows but one spell. The adventure of subsidence and desperation that follows wanders from city to country, touched with a bit of romance and social progression.
I loved it and highly recommend it and the rest of the Ethshar series without reservation. Great stuff!
