Night nurse Gail Henshaw knows how to give the next shift a useful account. In November 1998, a patient on Ward 6 West makes that suddenly difficult: Celia Mott is warm, awake, and talking while the staff cannot obtain a pulse or blood pressure.

The readings return. Then another patient loses the ability to speak during an ordinary trip down the corridor—and recovers when they turn back.

Gail and her colleagues keep caring for the people in their beds as the evidence begins to point toward the hospital itself. Some patients may still be able to leave. Others have become dependent on the rooms keeping them alive.

Moving everyone to safety will mean choosing two different destinations. Getting it wrong could kill the people Gail is trying to protect.
