PUBLISHERS WEEKLY
At the start of this disappointing psychological thriller from McKinnon (Sister Dear), Jack Smith wakes up on the beach early one morning in Brookmount, Md., with amnesia after sustaining a head injury. He can't remember his name, but he has vague memories of Maine and feels compelled to travel there to uncover his identity. Meanwhile, Jack's girlfriend, Lily Reid, is waiting for him to meet her at her apartment for breakfast. When he fails to arrive, she realizes he's gone missing. In Maine, Jack is welcomed by his protective stepsister, who tells him his name's actually Asher Bennett, and he left Maine two years earlier after being suspected of pushing his ex-girlfriend off a cliff to her death. Meanwhile, Lily feels betrayed after discovering that Jack's license is a forgery. Determined to find answers, she unearths some secrets in his apartment that point to his whereabouts. A promising setup and skillfully fleshed out characters compensate only in part for the predictable plot and the contrived conclusion. McKinnon has done better.
