Nine-year-old Jody does well at school, despite living in a run-down part of East London.
Then one terrible night, her life changes forever, and Jody is forced to make an impossible choice between telling the truth and keeping her family together.
The police bring her in for questioning, and pressure her to tell them what really happened but is Jody ready to admit it, even to herself?
Will the truth win out, or will Jody be sucked into a web of lies in order to protect her family?

Great story
Really enjoyed this book and I’m looking forward to reading more from her.
Fantastic read
What a gripping read. I stumbled upon this and read it in three hours, and now I'm completely drawn in to this world. The imagery is incredibly powerful, and at all turns you're left desperate to know what's next.
What really got me was how deeply I felt for Jody, right from the beginning. At no moment did I feel any annoyance toward her. You really end up empathising with every choice she makes; you watch her grow up and you trace back every step to her traumas and upbringing. The foreshadowing is just fantastic. I appreciate, as well, the genuine kindness and empathy shown toward addicts while still being brutally honest about the realities of living that life. The narrative was never cruel to the victims of terrible crimes that had forced them into the situations they were in, but it was honest about how cruel the world so often is. It's very refreshing.
There are a few grammatical errors in the final few chapters, but that's my only complaint.
