A small mining community with history dating back to the gold rush, Stone Town becomes the unexpected site of both a murder and a disappearance. That compounds the intrigue for Senior Sergeant Mark Ariti, the returning protagonist of Margaret Hickey’s previous book, still haunted by his conscience after the events of Cutters End. Here, Mark reunites with his younger colleague, Senior Constable Jagdeep Kaur, as he tries to locate the source of the ill will festering behind the scenes of this tight-knit town, where property development and organised crime are also thrown into the mix. Hickey once again takes a considered approach to outback noir, lingering on true-to-life details while delivering well-crafted twists.

Lots of red herrings
Hmm I didn’t like this as much as the previous one in this series.
Note to author… the treatment of the snakebite was dreadful. Perhaps a little bit of research about how they are managed. Any doctor or nurse working in a rural Australian emergency department can probably tell you
