Publisher Description

A modern amorality play about a 17-year-old girl, the wilder shores of connoisseurship, and the power of false friends
Maman was exigeante—there is no English word–and I had the benefit of her training. Others may not be so fortunate. If some other young girl, with two million dollars at stake, finds this of use I shall count myself justified.

Raised in Marrakech by a French mother and English father, a 17-year-old girl has learned above all to avoid mauvais ton ("bad taste" loses something in the translation). One should not ask servants to wait on one during Ramadan: they must have paid leave while one spends the holy month abroad. One must play the piano; if staying at Claridge’s, one must regrettably install a Clavinova in the suite, so that the necessary hours of practice will not be inflicted on fellow guests. One should cultivate weavers of tweed in the Outer Hebrides but have the cloth made up in London; one should buy linen in Ireland but have it made up by a Thai seamstress in Paris (whose genius has been supported by purchase of suitable premises). All this and much more she has learned, governed by a parent of ferociously lofty standards. But at 17, during the annual Ramadan travels, she finds all assumptions overturned. Will she be able to fend for herself? Will the dictates of good taste suffice when she must deal, singlehanded, with the sharks of New York?

Not Knowng

Not knowing, often so unsettling in real life, can be most intriguing in a book. Helen De Witt’s short novella, “The English understand Wool”, bristles with “not knowing” from the very first sentence to an identical, very last.

I wish to give nothing away nor mar your enjoyment of this savage mystery in the slightest, but when an author starts and ends with the book’s own title you just know something is going on. And it is, but I had to hunt the internet to winkle it out.

When I finished the novella, and it was as the blurb said, quite readable in an afternoon, I realised I had been cleverly led through one mystery but left with another.
Worse than that, I had discovered my own little mystery along the way, and it was that mystery that drove me into the outstretched arms of Dr Google and his dammed artificial intelligence.

I should explain that the story is one of a seventeen-year-old girl/woman who experiences not one but two momentous life changing events. Major dramatic emotional components are there, deceit and betrayal. But love? Compassion? Sort of, I guess? At least the behaviours that are symbolic of love and compassion. And a life, lived to appear without blame, certainly brings us close to the beating heart of both the novella and the author, I suspect.

For me, there was a coldness and bitterness in the writing that made me curious about Helen de Witt herself. Although nothing like “The Talented Mr Ripley”, Patricia Highsmith’s name just popped into my mind. I love Patricia Highsmith’s writing as well, so none of this is criticism, just curiosity.

I really need to read Helen de Witt’s debut novel “The Last Samurai”, I know. I do know that there was a deal of author/editor wrangling over that novel and wonder if “The English understand Wool” owes its take on the publishing industry to real events. Anyway, that solved my mystery about the writing style.

As far as my other two mysteries are concerned, the mystery at the start and the mystery at the end, I will have to let you decide. Perhaps, I’m overly suspicious of my fellows? Perhaps, I should be more trusting?

Whatever, for me, this was a most curious and unexpected story that was hard to put down, even at the end. Especially at the end!
