LA in the aftermath of the great mortgage meltdown post-2008
Precis
Criminal defence jobs have dried up for our hero thanks to the great recession, but he’s developed a useful side hustle defending mortgagees against fraudulent dispossession from homes they can no longer afford. Then one of clients, a self-styled campaigner against greedy banks, is charged with murdering one for the aforementioned bankers. There follows a re-run of The Lincoln Lawyer (2005, and the movie with Matthew McConaughey) with an accused he doesn’t like, doesn’t believe, but defends to the best of his ability anyway, except she’s female this time, not male. Readers are reminded of Mr Haller’s part-Hispanic heritage as emphasised in the contemporary Prime Video version as distinct to the more familiar (to me at least) Matthew McConaughey big screen version. Social commentary from the little guy perspective on the subprime mortgage mess of the late 2000s also features.
Writing
Mr C’s writing has evolved (got better) with time and it’s interesting to read and compare the version from a dozen years ago with more recent efforts.
Bottom Line
Nothing new to see here really, but it’s still great. And I’m still hanging out for Mickey Haller #7 (due in November 2003)
