Andy hadn't wanted to be a soldier, but there was a war on and no one got a choice anymore. Like everyone else he was shipped off and lined up on an alien world, to stand his ground between the unstoppable guns and the impenetrable shields. Battles are unpredictable things, however, and a poor conscript might get lucky. Or die trying.
