APPLE BOOKS REVIEW
The first novel in Carla Kovach's Detective Gina Harte series plays on some of our darkest fears in bizarre and unexpected ways. A newborn baby has been found abandoned. And a DNA test shows the mother is Deborah Jenkins—a woman who went missing four years ago. The pulse-pounding investigation that follows is a life-or-death race against time, as Detective Inspector Harte embarks on a doggedly determined mission to find her. Kovach really knows how to develop the kind of fully realised characters you start to imagine yourself having conversations with—even if they're dangerously unhinged. We loved the way Kovach used this strong ensemble to show us glimpses of the story from different points of view. From Deborah’s unerring resilience to her captor’s twisted rationale, every aspect of this thriller is both deeply compelling and downright unsettling. The white-knuckle intensity of this frantic-paced adventure will have you staying up way past your bedtime.

Gripping
I had a hard time putting this book down. It was a good read, a little lengthy in the extra details, like every little step the main character took, wiping their nose etc. and a good bit of grammatical errors. But all in all the story was great, I will definitely be reading more Carla Kovach books!
Mm
Well I’m only giving it five star because I started reading invincible and I didn’t feel like reading this one like it bc it seems interesting with the first page and it was free so yay
Waste of time, absolutely skip this one.
Let me say that I never write reviews but am compelled to because this one is a complete waste of the time you are alive. I skimmed this book and even that was a waste of time. Anyone who thinks this is good is probably in third grade. Then again I’m used to reading writing that’s George RR Martin-level caliber so maybe I’m asking too much from a free book.
Not twisty, predictable, bad writing, flat characters, no meaningful relationships between them, overused phrases (“he sobbed” is written maybe close to 25 times).
The characters are absolutely forgettable including the main character. Somehow her DV background and Debbie’s imprisonment are dead boring to read. This is advertised as having a twist. Where, pray tell?? This book is a prime example of telling (badly) and not showing. This reads like a timeline and none of the dramatics feel dramatic.
