The New York Times bestselling author of the Marked Men series delivers an "emotional, unforgettable" (Lori Wilde) romance about a rugged Texas sheriff who must protect the woman who was once his sworn enemy...
Case Lawton comes from a family of criminals. So as the sheriff of Loveless, Texas, he's determined to do everything by the book--until he's called to Aspen Barlow's office after a so-called break-in. The last thing he wants to do is help the woman who cost him custody of his son. But Aspen isn't the heartless lawyer Case remembers, and he starts to question his long-held grudge...
Aspen is scared for her life, and Case is her last hope for protection. But to get him on her side, she'll have to reveal the painful truth from all those years ago. Now, as they work together to track down a dangerous criminal, Case and Aspen learn to trust each other. And as the threats escalate, it becomes clear there's a thin line between love and hate... because there's nothing Case wouldn't do to keep her safe.

PUBLISHERS WEEKLY
Everything is not what it seems in this tangled, sexy contemporary. Case Lawton hadn't planned on becoming a husband and father right out of high school, but such is life. Eventually he became sheriff and ended his abusive father's reign of terror over small Loveless, Tex., but his marriage fell apart. When family lawyer Aspen Barlow married into a prominent Loveless family, she thought her days of being treated as an outcast were over. She had moved there from Chicago and was nothing like her peers; Case was the only person who made her high school years bearable. When she's assigned to represent his manipulative wife in their divorce proceedings, her friendship with Case quickly crashes and burns. Then, someone with an even bigger grudge targets Aspen, and Case sets aside his personal animosity against her to protect her from a long list of possible suspects. Bullets fly, lies overflow, and secrets emerge. This tense, sensual romance is chock full of headstrong, admirable characters who will appeal to romance and suspense fans alike.
Customer Reviews
A suspenseful swoon worthy romance!
Case took over being the Sheriff of Loveless, Texas from his corrupt father and he’s been trying to make things right ever since. Aspen has been hated by Case ever since she was his ex-wife’s attorney in the custody case for their son ... that Case lost. But when Aspen’s life is threatened, Case does his job and helps to keep her safe ... even if it means keeping her in his house where he knows she’ll be safe.
This book has so many twists and turns that I couldn’t put it down and finished it in one sitting. I just loved Case ... he is the protector that every woman secretly wants. And Aspen ... I loved how she was in a small package that packed a big punch. She would stand right up to Case even though he was a head taller than her. Case and Aspen hated each other ... but you know that old saying “there’s a fine line between love and hate”. At the end of this book the author sets up the next one quite nicely ... it’s about Kody Lawless, Case’s sister and his longtime friend, Hill who is a Texas Ranger. I can’t wait for that book!
