The first instalment of Brandon Sanderson’s Mistborn fantasy trilogy delivers enough dazzle to make you believe in magic. The action happens on Scadrial, a world of ash and mist where the heartless, seemingly immortal Lord Ruler rewards the aristocracy for their loyalty and makes life a living hell for everybody else. Our hero, Kelsier, is a Robin Hood figure with big plans to bring the system to its knees through war and economic ruin. It helps that he’s among those on Scadrial equipped with magical powers. It helps even more that he’s joined by a street-smart guttersnipe named Vin, who’s got powers of her own. Sanderson’s world-building capabilities are incredible. He drops enough details to make every inch of Scadrial feel thrillingly real without getting bogged down in description. And he brings enough epic sweep to the story to wrap you up and carry you right along with him, whichever way the complex drama leads. Fair warning: You may get so engrossed in the Mistborn universe that you won’t want to return to your own.

Sanderson's eerie second fantasy (after 2005's Elantris), set in a mist-haunted, ash-ridden world, pits Kelsier, "the Survivor of Hathsin," against the immortal Lord Ruler's 1,000-year domination of both the Great Houses and their serflike "skaa." Through Allomancy acquired in the Ruler's most hellish prison, Kelsier can "burn" 10 metals internally, fueling superhuman powers he uses to assemble rebels in a loose plan to destroy the nobility, the empire and the Lord Ruler himself. Kelsier uses Vin, a street urchin with the same Mistborn powers Kelsier possesses, to infiltrate the Great Houses' society, where she falls in love with philosopher prince Elend Venture. This mystico-metallurgical fantasy combines Vin's coming-of-age-in-magic and its well-worn theme of revolt against oppression with copious mutilations, a large-scale cast of thieves, cutthroats, conniving nobles and exotic mutants. The fast-paced action scenes temper Vin's interminable ballroom intrigues, while the characters, though not profoundly drawn, have a raw stereotypic appeal.

Thrilling … Enticing … Gripping
I just couldn’t put away final empire and surprisingly wrapped up the entire book, in less than a week from purchase day. Highly unlike of me, as I like to read slow and absorb the development of any fanatsy world at mild pace. However, The final empire was intriguing from page one to it's epilogue.
Brandon has gracefully and profoundly woven political, philosophical, spiritual and human aspects of life with well imaginative and curated magical world. Story was griping from the first chapter and the presence of all characters seemed organic and meaningful.
Have already purchased the well of ascension to explore further; this magical world infused with Mistborn Allomancers, created by ingenious and highly creative mind of Brandon Sanderson.

Great intro to Sanderson
This was my first Sanderson title, and opened a door to the world of fantasy for me. The depth of character and world building made it difficult to put down.
