Duncan left his farm in order to save it, leaving behind his two younger brothers, all of them orphaned from the last round of influenza.  With his paycheck going home, not knowing if he's fighting a losing battle with a land-hungry neighbor sabotaging their business, Duncan had no idea he'd been about to be shot multiple times.  Infection raging through his broken body, they may actually take his leg.  He is facing a lifetime of humiliation and no means of supporting himself.
