Description de l’éditeur
If you allow your differences to hold you back, you'll never discover how wonderful your life can be.
Honorable Dorothea Carrington is companion to the Dowager Duchess of Fairfield. Though she enjoys a good life and regularly travels the world at the dowager's whim, something is lacking. Born with a birth defect that makes her an easy target for ridicule and rejection, all she wants is acceptance and to be loved for herself. If the opportunity to marry comes about, she'd accept with alacrity, no questions asked.
Major Anthony Jasper's world has been upended. Though retired from the military, the past won't stay buried. When his mistress leaves a six-year-old daughter in his care, he's at sixes and sevens. It was never in his plan to have children, for the world is a horrible place. As his wit's end is reached, he turns to the most unlikely source for help—his godmother, the Dowager Duchess of Fairfield.
Thea's intrigued with the major, even more so when she discovers his daughter possesses a birthmark that sets her apart, but the dowager's not best pleased at the friendship that springs between her companion and godson. To Anthony's credit, he does everything in his power to ignore the pretty, blonde-haired lady who's fearful of being in society, but his godmother's demands on his time constantly puts him in Dorothea's company. It'll take some sneaky interference to see them make a go of a happily ever after, but it'll be worth the effort.

A tale of resilience and acceptance
Will she let her past hurt and fears hold her back …
I’m always a sucker for tales of people battered by life, each of their steps is twice more difficult and their journey to their happily ever after is even more their responsibility to make it really happen.
Dorothea feels like the ugly ducking, rejected by many even by her family for not being whole enough. Why in her way to avoid further hurt, she hides behind her body impediment as a means to escape her peers, using it as a shield.
Until she encounters a little girl who like her is no classical standards beauty but realize it does not mean she is not beautiful in her own way. But saying it is easier than living by her words when for years she has experienced a life outside the ton to protect herself from heartaches.
Anthony is a mere mister, who was able to make a career for himself as a soldier only thanks to his godmother who took the mantle when his family passed away. Since he was discharged, he made do with his talent as an unknown painter and just scrape a living to not starve off. So when he discovers he is father of a young girl, he knows he must change his path in life. And the woman who helped his upbringing might have an answer.
How I loved Anthony, he is not flawless but he is such a sweet being with a kind heart and an open mind, he makes mistakes, like scared or angered people, his words might come harsh and wrong but his beating organ is at the right place as he is willing to change the course of his life for the people he has come to love.
4.5 stars for this love story of three persons as it is little Emma who began the patching of their life to make them a couple.
