My First Book Hangover
Where do I start? Pullman has an immense ability to create an immersive, believable and engaging world. Every page gripped me and I couldn’t stop reading. If you’re a ‘gen Z’ like me, I watched the film multiple times over the years before reading this book. I felt like it was a good approach for me, as it helped envisage the characters and the many different locations better.
My only gripe is that it is chock-full of descriptive text which is interesting and engaging, but there are a plethora of words that come up that were new vocabulary for me, so bare that in mind if you’re looking for ‘easy reading’ - words like ‘dais’, ‘inveigled’, ‘thronged’ etc. Overall, it doesn’t impact the book too much.
Whilst the film leaves a lot to be desired, the book is a stellar novel and was captivating to read from start to finish. The cliffhanger ending has made me want to buy the second book immediately.

A really good book, well written and has a great storyline. the first in a really incredible series. I would definitely recommend it to anyone looking for a first class fantasy book

If you’ve just read Harry Potter and are looking for a book to read I would highly recommend Philip pullmans dark materials series which is also very magical and has such beautiful settings and Phillip has described everything really well and helped me make such a good picture in my head!!!!!
