Pregnant and terrified, Jenna Burns sits in prison accused over the murder of her 14-year-old stepdaughter and disappearance of her finacé. As Jenna begins desperate bid to prover her innocence and survive incarceration, Angela Clarke captures her fear and anguish so evocatively, you’ll feel like you’re in the cell alongside her. You won’t exactly be serving hard time though. This tense, tightly paced story, full of richly drawn characters, is impossible to put down—and it offers a detailed and enlightening look at the UK prison system. We were caught in its vice-like grip until the shocking and rewarding finale.

This was close to 5* but was let down for me by occasionally being a bit repetitive, occasionally slightly implausible and because it was written in the present tense.
Even the chapters headed ‘Then’ were inexplicably in the present tense.
The use of the tense worked at times in this book, giving more immediacy, but generally I found it very annoying as regularly it sounded almost clumsy and intruded into my enjoyment of the story.
The best things about the book for me were that, with the mainly prison setting, it was different to most other books in this genre and the ending was, on the whole, satisfying.
Awful!
Just did not like Jenna- she didn’t feel real. Most of the other characters were just stereotypes behaving as all other ‘baddies’ or ‘weak, pathetic women’ have done in so many other stories. Really not worth the time spent reading. The best bit was the acknowledgements at the end! They get the one star!

Such a gripping read from start and finish and that ending was brilliant loved it so much!!!
