My heart feels full...
It's important. It's really important to me that this review does GJ Walker-Smith's third book in the Wishes Series, justice. It's important because I am going to go as far as saying that it has been one of the BEST series I have read (I read prolifically, all genres). I came across the Wishes Series earlier in the year - I bought the first two books because I thought the covers were stunning...(how fickle I hear you say :) ) Well, they are. I hadn't heard of GJ and for a while the books sat on my kindle unread.
"Storm Shells" is the final instalment of Charli and Adam's story. What can I say? I could only hold out a week since it was published before reading. I didn't want to start because that would mean I would finish, bringing the end of Charli and Adam's story, and I didn't want it to end. That said, once I started, 10 minutes in, it all came back to me why their story had captivated me from the beginning...I couldn't breathe, I was holding my breath, reading - devouring, anticipating...wonderful.
GJ doesn't "waste" words, no babbling - every word has meaning and a place...like a music note, words joining up to become a melody. Her writing is beautiful, truly. Her characters come alive. You know how they think, you imagine how they look, how they feel. You get to know their friends, the dynamics of their families and above all; you understand them, why they do what they do and why they make the decisions they make. You invest time in their relationships. Charli and Alex's relationship has ALWAYS been my most favourite of the series (I have a crush on Alex...shhhh) That man... My favourite quote of all from "Storm Shells" is:
"I've jumped out of a tall tree this time, Alex" I muttered.
"I'm at the bottom, Charli. You'll be fine"
And when you read the series, you'll understand why...
There is tongue in cheek humour running throughout "Storm Shells" (and the whole series). Single sentences that make you laugh out loud (such gems, they are). In particular, a description of "Lily Tate", someone Charli has grown up with. Charli describes her as "Dumb as a stump"...four words but you are imagining what Lily is like already, aren't you??!
Everything is "rounded off" in "Storm Shells". Any questions I may have had were answered full. I ended the series content, happy, thrilled and mostly, my heart felt full. Thank you GJ, for me, the series was a masterpiece.
