JOANNE HAYNES HAS A SECRET.
THAT IS NOT HER REAL NAME.
And there’s more. Her flat isn’t hers. Her cats aren't hers. Even her hair isn’t really hers.
Nor is she any of the other women she pretends to be. Not the bestselling romance novelist who gets her morning snack from the doughnut van on the seafront. Nor the pregnant woman in the dental surgery. Nor the chemo patient in the supermarket for whom the cashier feels ever so sorry. They're all just alibis.
In fact, the only thing that’s real about Joanne is that nobody can know who she really is.
But someone has got too close. It looks like her alibis have begun to run out….

Great read
Loved this book. Great characters and really intriguing storytelling
An addictive read with a heart-wrenching story at the core. Absolutely brilliant!
The blurb for this book totally sold it to me! I had high hopes from the start, and I was not disappointed. This is the first book I’ve read by C J Skuse and it most certainly won’t be the last.
Joanne Haynes is 29, she was born in Liverpool, she has three brothers and her parents died in a car accident abroad. Joanne seems like a normal person, right? Wrong! Joanne and her past are fake as are the previous identities given to her over the years.
Not satisfied with her alibis, Joanne spins a yarn wherever she goes, how she remembers whether she’s Mary, Ruth, Genevieve or any of the other names she goes by I’ll never know. Why does she need to lie and why can she not live her life with the name she was born with? I can’t tell you that, but what I can tell you is that you absolutely must read this book!
This story has everything you could want in a book. It has all the suspense and twists and turns you’d expect from a great thriller, but it also has a funny side to it which had me laughing out loud several times. Yet in amongst the suspense and the laughter, there is also a side to this story that will pull at your heartstrings, it’s definitely a book that gives you all the feels.
Joanne, Ruth, Mary, whoever she decides to be, will always be one of my most favourite characters ever in a book. Some of her lies are so wrong, but I just couldn’t help but love her. Initially, I thought she was a bit cuckoo and maybe she is a little, but she has good reason to be.
The chapters switch perfectly from the past to the present day, keeping you gripped right up until the fantastic ending. Cleverly plotted and fast-paced, I never once lost interest and I couldn’t wait to pick the book back up each time I had to put it down. I didn’t guess any of the twists making this an unpredictable read.
I can definitely see this being in my top 10 reads for 2021!
