The Dread Wyrm The Dread Wyrm

Publisher Description

SOME ARE BORN TO POWER
SOME SEIZE IT
AND SOME HAVE THE WISDOM NEVER TO WIELD IT

The Red Knight has stood against soldiers, against armies and against the might of an empire without flinching. He's fought on real and on magical battlefields alike, and now he's facing one of the greatest challenges yet.
A tournament.
A joyous spring event, the flower of the nobility will present arms and ride against each other for royal favour and acclaim. It's a political contest - and one which the Red Knight has the skill to win. But the stakes may be higher than he thinks. The court of Alba has been infiltrated by a dangerous faction of warlike knights, led by the greatest knight in the world: Jean de Vrailly - and the prize he's fighting for isn't royal favour, but the throne of Alba itself.
Where there is competition there is opportunity; the question is, will the Red Knight take it? Or will the creatures of the Wild seize their chance instead . . .

The epic series continues

The Red Knight now travels back to Alba where the Tournament is to be held from The Empire. But the Knights from Galle have plans to usurp the Crown and Galle is assisting the Wild in an invasion from the North. All this is part of a larger plan by a Power and the Red Knight will be lucky to survive the tournament let alone the coming battles.

This is Book 3 of the epic Traitor’s Son series and flits between different characters as all the various storylines are pulled together for a climactic battle. Because the focus shifts so often the storylines become confusing and the book is the worse for it. It is also a much darker book than the previous two books. Readers of the previous two books will know that the battles are brutal and realistic and that remains the case here. Unlike other series, characters can and do die and they are killed off quite unsentimentally during the various machinations and battles. One minor irritation is that the main characters act like children rather than adults at times but overall the book is a gripping read.

This is not as good as Book 1 or 2 but is nevertheless a must-buy for those that want to continue the story of the Red Knight. Recommended.
