Not bad but basically a battle report
Pretty short as novels go - a quarter of the page count is an extract for its sister book. It's an interesting concept, to see the conflict from both sides, but I'm not sure it's well written enough to justify the experiment.
It starts off suggesting some interesting insight into an ultramarine and a word bearer who were once friends - but then doesn't bother to follow this - instead opting for a very long description of marines shooting each other in the dark. I like a good battle scene but an entire novel of 'then he shot them but they shot his friend' etc gets dull quickly.
The author has written better than this before, so I'm just assuming he couldn't come up with a decent literary way of Joining these characters up other than a throwaway line about them fighting together once - doesn't really get you involved.
