APPLE BOOKS REVIEW
From the author: “I had the idea for this book when I was staying in an Airbnb in Paris. Before COVID, I would book myself a week away somewhere and just go and write rather than doing an official writing retreat. I ended up in this beautiful and atmospheric, but wonderfully creepy, apartment building, as I was writing The Guest List. I don’t think they’d changed anything about the apartment for decades—all the kitchen appliances were really retro. I would sit there writing at all hours of the day and night. And on several occasions—first thing in the morning and last thing at night—I would hear something really heavy being dragged across the floor upstairs. I didn’t know if it was furniture, but it was quite odd. Obviously, as a mystery writer, I started thinking, ‘Someone is dragging a body.’ That started the cogs turning. The building made it wholesale into the book. There were just wonderful details about it, like being able to see into other apartments and the hallway light being on a timer and going out when you were halfway upstairs, plunging you into darkness. But when I came to actually write the book, we were in the first lockdown. It was early 2020 and I was pregnant and stuck, so it was a wonderful way of escaping. We’re so lucky as readers and writers really to escape on the page. I think The Hunting Party and The Guest List are sister books in a way and with this I wanted to do something different that pushed the envelope a bit more. I also wanted to engage more with certain issues. And I really wanted Jess, the main character, to be the sleuth in this and feel quite alone. I had to find ways of making her feel isolated and played.”
PUBLISHERS WEEKLY
Jess Hadley, the gutsy heroine of this well-paced mystery from bestseller Foley (The Guest List), arrives at the swanky Paris apartment building of her aspiring journalist half brother, Ben Daniels, after fleeing her latest unpleasant job in England. But Ben is not there and doesn't show up the next morning. When Jess asks the other tenants about her brother, all of them—including imperious penthouse dweller Sophie Meunier, a blackmail victim; timid 19-year-old Mimi, who's infatuated with Ben; and aggressive drunk Antoine, who suspects Ben has seduced his wife—deflect her questions. In her search for Ben, Jess learns the building's tenants are members of a single family with secrets to hide. After an editor Ben worked for takes Jess's worries about his disappearance seriously, the details of those secrets start to emerge, along with a credible portrait of a deeply damaged family. Amid plenty of red herrings and distinctive characters, each shifty in their own way, the relentlessly bleak plot builds to an uplifting twist ending that feels neither pat nor overly rosy. Foley reliably entertains.

Worth reading
Enjoyed this, and didn’t expect the end but it wasn’t my favourite book I’ve ever read.
So complex
I haven’t found easy to follow the story of this book. Centring the life of many around a place it is certainly an interesting way to present a story. But the shift between the personal life exchanges and the facts which move the story confused me . I cannot really explain what blocks this story from flowing but it is encouraging to read that the writer had the support of so many people.
Original story
Hmmm…this unfortunately failed to grip me like I wanted it to. I did enjoy how it was from the different peoples perspective and I really rooted for the main character Jess throughout the book! 3 ⭐️⭐️⭐️ x
