APPLE BOOKS REVIEW
Cambridge-based novelist Paige Toon specialises in epic, sweeping love stories and she’s certainly on top form here. A sun-baked holiday romance echoes down the years after Ellie meets Ash in Lisbon, while she’s travelling around Europe, and they spend three gorgeous days together. They plan to meet up again in Madrid but miss each other and that’s the end of that. Six years later, Ellie is hankering after a fresh start in life when her long-lost holiday boyfriend pops back up again, out of blue. We won’t spoil it for you but let’s just say it’s going to be emotional. Giovanna Fletcher describes this as “the perfect book to escape into” and we have to agree.
PUBLISHERS WEEKLY
Toon (Seven Summers) breaks hearts with this poignant tale of love, loss, and second chances. Ellie Knapley and Ash Berkeley first meet in Lisbon, where they're each separately mourning their late best friends, and instantly feel a soulmate-level connection. After spending three steamy and hopelessly romantic days together, they make plans to meet up again in Madrid—only for Ash not to show up. Six years of no contact later, they're thrown back together under unexpected circumstances as Ellie, now a gardener for a British noble family, learns that Ash was never who she thought he was. Toon makes their reunion emotionally fraught as she skillfully fills in the blanks about why Ash abandoned Ellie all those years ago. The narrative works because their connection feels intense and palpable despite the compressed timeline of their initial affair. Enhancing the drama are some despicable villains, including Ash's father and Ellie's mother, and abundant miscommunication. Readers who like their romances on the angsty side are sure to connect with this.

4* easy reading
I've previously enjoyed reading Paige Toon's books, so jumped at the opportunity to read her latest. I wasn't disappointed. Once started I could barely stop, the author has packed her book with emotion and angst.
Ellie and Ash meet in Lisbon, the three days they spend together was enough time to fall in love. But after missing their prearranged meeting in Madrid a week later, there was no way to contact each other. Almost six years later they meet again when Ellie arrives at her new job as a gardener at a large private estate and discovers that Ash is the owner's son.
As far as Ellie is concerned, the man she's loved for so long is socially far above her and she won't consider a future together. Ellie frequently infuriated me. She's an inveterate snob, stubbornly rejecting anyone associated with wealth, whether earned or inherited, ignoring the obligations it might incur. Ash is torn between family responsibility (tho I've no idea what he 'did' to produce any income for the upkeep of his ancestral home) and his love for Ellie.
The plot is emotional, annoying and predictable - yet still a good read.
With thanks to Random House and NetGalley for an advanced copy of this book, this review is my personal, unbiased opinion.
What if I never get over you
One dimensional characters who failed to engage me, and despite the potential for a great story line, the book was dull and uninteresting.
Wonderful
Just wonderful, I’m just off to look up cabins in the woods…
You can never be disappointed with Paige Toons characters I miss them already and it’s only been 2 minutes.
