ABSTRACT This article examines the adoption of Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) technology in the commercial aviation industry, focusing on the role of RFID systems for improved baggage handling and security. Based upon secondary and trade literature, the article provides a timely overview of developments with regard to the implementation of the technology in commercial aviation. Particular attention is given to the initiative of Delta Airlines, an industry leader in the testing and development of RFID systems for improved operations in baggage handling.
