A visit to the Monumental Cemetery can be challenging. The dimension certainly is not negligible (about 250,000 square meters), the distribution of spaces follow urbanistic criteria that seem capable of confusing: they are not reduced to a Roman castrum grid but include widenings, diagonals, rounds (more or less small), galleries of conspicuous length and areas raised above the normal level. The Maciachini project avoided reflecting the severity of other neoclassical cemeteries (Genoa, Brescia, Verona), but excluded monotony as well, even though a place of sad meditation.

The main difficulty, however, is the examination of monumements, aedicules and the environment of the entire ambient.

But these logistical observations, perhaps more daunting than desired and in any event personal, affect only a limited audience, those who can take the time for “on site” observation. La visita del Cimitero Monumentale può essere impegnativa. La dimensione non è certo trascurabile (circa 250.000 mq), la distribuzione degli spazi segue criteri urbanistici che sembrano capaci di confondere: non sono ridotti a una griglia da castrum romano ma presentano slarghi, diagonali, rotonde più e meno piccole, gallerie di cospicua lunghezza, aree rialzate rispetto al livello normale. Il progetto di Maciachini non voleva rispecchiare la severità di altri cimiteri neoclassici (Genova, Brescia, Verona), ma rifiutare la monotonia, anche in un luogo di mesta meditazione.

La difficoltà maggiore è comunque quella dell’esamina dei monumenti, delle edicole e dell’ambiente tutto.

Ma queste osservazioni logistiche, forse più scoraggianti del voluto e comunque personali, interesseranno solo una platea limitata, quella di chi può permettersi l’osservazione “sul campo”. Per il resto del mondo, le centinaia di bellissime immagini appositamente eseguite per Thais.it offrono un’occasione di immediata fruibilità. Buona visione.
