What is wrong with India?

Population? Politics? Corruption? Education? Unemployment? Bureaucracy? Caste? Religion? Infrastructure? Social media? Bad leadership? Irresponsible citizens?

Almost everyone has an answer.

Sandeep Chavan asks a different question: What keeps producing what appears wrong with India?

What's Wrong with India? — Population, Politics, and the Architecture of Problems is not a political attack, nationalist defence, party manifesto, or catalogue of complaints. It is a structural inquiry into how more than a billion people, families, institutions, markets, political systems, businesses, digital platforms, and governments participate simultaneously in producing the country we experience.

Beginning with population, the book develops a radically different lens. Population is not merely a number or burden. It becomes consequential through participation. The same young person can appear as a student to education, a worker to the economy, a voter to politics, a consumer to business, a user to digital platforms—and a person asking a much larger question:

What can I become?

From this foundation, the book follows India through education, competitive examinations, employment, Gen Z aspirations, attention markets, vote-bank politics, identity, polarization, digital networks, bureaucracy, welfare, institutional delay, informal workarounds, and the recurring preference for repair over deeper reform.

Why do certain jobs become responsible for resolving income, status, security, marriage, dignity, and family expectations at once?

Why can political success produce social difficulty?

Why does resilience sometimes protect people from institutional failure while simultaneously protecting weak institutions from reform?

Why do citizens rely on agents, coaching systems, private alternatives, family networks, migration, and jugaad?

And why do supposedly solved problems return?

Chavan introduces the distinction between Population Load and Population Resolution Capital: the same population that generates enormous pressure also contains India's greatest reservoir of distributed problem-solving capacity.

The book's central structural movement is:

Population Field → Participation → Delta → Resolution → Manifestation → Consequence → Changed Geometry → New Delta

Its conclusion is neither pessimistic nor utopian.

India does not need to become problem-free.

It needs to become more resolution-capable—a society in which fewer people require extraordinary personal effort for ordinary outcomes, institutions learn before recurrence becomes normal, political success is audited by social consequence, and population is increasingly experienced not merely as pressure to be managed but as capacity waiting to participate.

This is a book for readers willing to move beyond the blame game.

Because perhaps the question is no longer:

Who ruined India?

It is:

What are all of us—citizens, institutions, politics, markets, families, and systems—continuously resolving India into?
