Swinging High, 8th reader, introduces action verb. The “ing” words.  They carry happy feelings and memories.  These words are melodious and full of sound. They are activity words.  There is nothing passive about them. The “ing” is a wonderful phonogram (family of words). Tell the child two things about the “ing” words: 1. The “ing” is a suffix — meaning the end of a word, and 2. That the “ing” word is a verb.  Also used is the silent letter shown with an outlined letter as in the word knots. “K” is silent when followed by an “n.”  “P” is silent when followed by “s.” “W” is silent when followed by “r.”  Also words can use another letter’s sound, as in “see.”  “See” uses the sound of “c.”
