Introduction Health is a birth right of every individual and there is increasing evidence that the dietary habits of people are important determinants of health. Proper dietary substances can protect people from chronic diseases such as coronary heart disease, cancer, obesity and diabetes mellitus. Diabetes mellitus is a universal health problem affecting human society at all stages of development (Rai, Sohi 1998). Diabetes mellitus is a relatively common disorder in India, which has been defined in the genetically and clinically heterogeneous group of disorders.
