Introduction It is generally regarded as virtually impossible to remove all stress from our lives; stress is a normal part of everyday life and accordingly cannot really be avoided. However it is necessary to be able to manage stress to not result in ill health. Exposure to chronic stress, if left unchecked, can lead to serious illness including cardiovascular abnormalities such as hypertension and heart disease (Porth 1998). Other stress related health problems include anxiety, depression, panic attacks, memory impairment, digestive disorders, autoimmune diseases and chronic fatigue syndrome (Gruner 2006). Hence the importance of being able to cope with stress--this is where adaptogenic herbs can help.
