Part Three(a): #HighSchool

“Tam? Did you hear me?”
Tam snapped out of his daydream and focused on his sister. Linh was giving him a look that could kill someone—or possibly even disembowel them.
“I asked if you would prefer mallowmelt or butterblasts after dinner.”
“Mallowmelt is fine,” he said, tugging his bangs lower over his eyes.
Linh sighed. “Still worried about Rayni?”
Tam blinked several times. Rayni had been the last thing on his mind. “No.”
Linh said, “Suuuurrrreeeee.”
“I’m serious.” Tam sighed and looked around the bedroom. Some water was collected into the shape of cat, which was apparently flirting with Princess Purryfins, earning a strange look from the murkat.
Linh tossed her hair and walked out of the room.
Tam sighed and pulled out his Imparter, staring at the blank screen.
Just then the screen turned on, and Keefe’s face appeared on it, startling Tam.
“Hey there,” said Keefe. “You doing OK Bangs Boy?”
“I’ve told you to stop calling me that,” said Tam. “Why are you calling me?”
“Cause I wanted to check on my favorite Shade,” said Keefe with a smirk on his face. “Actually,” he added “You’re the only Shade I know. Still are you doing OK?”
“Yeah, I guess.” Tam didn’t really want to share his feelings with his rival.
Keefe shook his head. “Tam, my friend, you don’t have to be an Empath to know that you’re lying. So why don’t you tell me what’s going on? Actually? Wait. Let me guess: worried about Rayni? No, wait—I’m pretty sure you’re still uncomfortable from that ability restrictor. Or did you have an argument with Linh again?” When Tam didn’t answer he said, “Wait a second—is this about Astrid?”
Tam blushed, and Keefe jumped up and down, shouting, “I READ BANGS BOY’S FEELINGS! WOOHOO!!” Then he sat down and said, “So, what are you gonna do about your crush?”
“Probably nothing,”Tam said, “because I can’t stop thinking about her.”
Keith burst out laughing. “Dude, that is the ultimate paradox. Do you hear yourself?”
“Yes, I hear myself,” said Tam. “Although—you might be right, that is kind of a paradox.” He paused, and then added, “Are you sure that nobody’s eavesdropping?”
“Yep,” Keefe replied. “And I’ve got news for you Tammy boy, because I think she has a crush on you too.”
Tam stared at Keefe like he had lost as mind. Then he said quietly, “You sure?”
“Not really,” said Keefe, “But you can always ask her. I’m kidding!” He added, as Tam stared at him again. “I’m serious, Tam,” he said. “You know her name, so just go ask her out. If she likes you back like I suspect she does, she’ll have no problem saying yes. But if she doesn’t like you back, then she will probably say no, and then layer it up with sugar and fluff just make sure your feelings aren’t hurt.”
“That’s helpful,” said Tam flatly. “Very extremely helpful, Keefe.”
“I try to be,” Keefe replied.
Tam sighed and said “I will have to get off eventually. But I guess it was nice talking to you.”
“It was nice talking to you too,” Keefe said. “see you around Bangs Boy.”
Tam was smiling as he clicked off.
