A couple becomes tangled in a web of secrets, lies, and bad choices in this tense domestic thriller. Adam and Amelia’s relationship is on the verge of collapse. She works in a stressful job at an animal shelter, and he’s a screenwriter who suffers from a frustrating disorder that makes it impossible for him to remember or recognize faces. They hope to reconnect during a weekend away in Scotland, but not long after arriving at their unexpectedly creepy and old accommodations, the pair begin to realize how little they truly know about one another. Alice Feeney’s plotting kept us guessing from beginning to end. As she jumps from one character to another and shifts from past to present, there’s an onslaught of shocking revelations we won’t spill here. Stephanie Racine and Richard Armitage’s narration matches the material perfectly, with her sweetly expressive tone contrasting with his dark, gruff delivery. Interesting with a Twist; Not what I was looking for
This book is a slow burn to me. I was interested in more of a thriller mystery, and this book is more like a haunted love story with lots of drama. The author did a wonderful job and I was never able to guess the outcome, which is always amazing. It just wasn’t my favorite style of action.
Absolutely phenomenal
I loved every second of this book—this five star rating is the first I’ve ever given out! The pacing was perfect as the story unfolded between the perspectives of the anniversary letters, Amelia, and Adam. Sprinkle in some suspense and horror, with each chapter ending in a way that makes it impossible to stop listening. Chef’s kiss.
Feeney does a phenomenal job laying little breadcrumbs that make you feel like you’re slowly piecing together the real story as it progresses. Then as you’re (im)patiently waiting for something to confirm your suspicions, the twist pulls the rug out from beneath your feet. I thought it was beyond impressive and clever, to the point where I had to stop and sit with it for a good 5-10 minutes!
Ok story, but slow.
Slowwww…third act doesn’t quite make up for it. Ok story.
