APPLE BOOKS REVIEW
Nothing is as it seems in this atmospheric thriller from Alice Feeney. It’s been a year since the disappearance of writer Grady Green’s wife, and he’s since fallen victim to depression, destitution, and…writer’s block. So when his agent offers him the chance to stay at a writing lodge on a remote Scottish island, he goes for it. But the small, isolated island offers more than he expected, like breathtaking scenery, a community of eccentric villagers—and maybe answers about the mystery of his lost wife. Alice Feeney once again proves why she is called the Queen of Twists. We were floored by her complex plot involving a missing journalist, a hidden manuscript, and a desperate author who’s left questioning his sanity. Actors Richard Armitage and Tuppence Middleton do a fantastic job with the dual narration, and the subtle use of ambient sounds like crashing waves, tolling bells, and realistic-sounding telephone conversations pulled us even deeper into the tension.

Bizarre
This is the first book I’ve read by the author. Don’t believe I’ll read another. Not because the book isn’t intriguing or sustains interest. Rather, it’s weirdness. Kudos to the narrator to whom I’m certain kept me listening until the end dispute the off putting genre. Read at your own risk!
Dark, disturbing, depressing.
I keep waiting for the story to reveal any redeeming qualities of any of the characters but so far there is nothing appealing about anyone except maybe the dog. What is the point of this story? Why should I care about the characters? Seems like the main guy is constantly whining about how hard it is to be a writer. But he’s a self-absorbed jerk so I don’t really feel sorry for him. I also don’t understand why the writer of this particular mystery has surrounded the main character with such unlikable people. The narrator has an appealing accent, but he gets way too dramatic and emotional and it sounds like he’s sobbing half of the time. I swear to God, I’m gonna stop buying audiobooks. It’s a waste of money.
Would read again.
