Released in 1912, it tells the story of an expedition to a plateau in the Amazon basin where prehistoric animals still survive. The character of Professor Challenger was introduced in this book. The novel also describes a war between Native Americans and a vicious tribe of ape-like creatures.
Scottish-born author and physician Sir Arthur Conan Doyle (1859 - 1930) was a major innovator in the field of crime fiction. His other works include science-fiction stories, historical novels, plays and romances, poetry, and non-fiction.

First “lost world” novel of the Golden Age of Paleontology
This is the original lost world novel from the Golden Age of Paleontology. Many of us read it in childhood and were inspired by it to become interested in science. I am pleased to find that it does not disappoint in adulthood. Conan Doyle was too much of an explorer and amateur paleontologist himself to write anything that was impossible or absurd.
The reader has just the right voice to speak the part of Malone, the journalist-narrator of The Lost World. You can hear him in the preview, although that segment describing what sends our narrator off to the jungles of South America in the first place is not typical of this story written originally for boys (and girls).
Absolutely superb!
This novel is wonderful! I couldn't be more pleased with the story and the narration. It's one of the BEST audiobooks I have listened to in a long time. Although written in 1912, the story is riveting, without being outdated. It's amazing that Sir Arthur Conan Doyle could have written a "science fiction" genre that has kept it's freshness, even when read in 2011. For those of you who love the classics, this is for you.
