A Wall Street Journal Best Science Fiction Book of 2018

“Just try to put this gripping thriller down once you pick it up.” —AARP

“A shock on every other page.” —Wall Street Journal

How far would you go to find The One?

A simple DNA test is all it takes. Just a quick mouth swab and soon you’ll be matched with your perfect partner—the one you’re genetically made for.

That’s the promise made by Match Your DNA. A decade ago, the company announced that they had found the gene that pairs each of us with our soul mate. Since then, millions of people around the world have been matched. But the discovery has its downsides: test results have led to the breakup of countless relationships and upended the traditional ideas of dating, romance and love.

Now five very different people have received the notification that they’ve been “Matched.” They’re each about to meet their one true love. But “happily ever after” isn’t guaranteed for everyone. Because even soul mates have secrets. And some are more shocking than others…

A word-of-mouth hit in the United Kingdom, The One is a fascinating novel that shows how even the simplest discoveries can have complicated consequences.

Slow burn that heats up

The first at least half of this book was a slow burn for me, I had to force myself to keep listening at one point. It very much reminded me of an episode of “Black Mirror” in the beginning and felt predictable. The character development drug on and each chapter being so short was a blessing and a curse. However, once it heated up it was hot! There is a clear line in the book where plots literally thicken and each character goes from being dull and predictable to completely unexpected. I also loved how the end of each character leaves you thinking what if or I wonder. If you can make it through the thick character building it is worth it.

3.5 Stars

I really thought all the stories with the different characters were going to tie up better than they did in the end. It was an enjoyable read. However, I feel like I would have done something’s differently. There were also so GRUESOME parts of the book that shocked me. So read your trigger warnings. I like that the chapters were short and they each ended on a cliffhanger. One of the only reasons I finished the book.

Highly recommend

I really enjoyed this book. John Marrs is a great writer. I will be checking out his other books as this was the first book I’ve read by him. There were multiple povs and I loved every one of them and cared about their stories.
