Chapter 10 of Ivywhisker’s Truth
Three faces appeared around the edge of the entrance hole. One white face with emerald green eyes, one white face with black ears and speckles, and a black-and-white splotched face with blue eyes.
Birch growled and bushed out his tail. She, however, recognized them.
“Mossypaw! Alderpaw! Dawnpaw!” she called. The three littermates’ eyes lit up and they bounded forward to nuzzle her and her kits after calling something out the entrance hole. A dark gray tom with pale gray splotches and a brown tom with mismatched blue and green eyes padded up. The brown tom dipped his head to Birch respectfully and she called out
“No need, Mudpaw! I’m here!”
Mudpaw’s eyes lit up and he bounded forward with Smokepaw. They licked her in greeting and turned to look at the kits with their siblings.
“Actually, it’s Mudpelt now,” Dawnpaw said, trying to look like she wasn’t bursting with pride and failing. “We told Mooncloud that we wanted to join you and she gave us our warrior names. She said that, after all, she had more contact with StarClan than the Clan leader. Now I’m Dawnstorm, Mossypaw is Mossytail, Smokepaw is Smokebranch, and Alderpaw is Alderfang.”
“I’m so proud of you! How did you know to ask Mooncloud?”
“She yelled at Moonwater after he banished you. Like, a lot. We figured it was safe.” Alderfang interjected.
“Who are the little ones?” Mossytail asked.
“This is Flip, Shimmer, Deer, and Finch.”
“I can see you in them,” Smokebranch meowed. “Finch looks exactly like you! I mean, she has your eyes and tail.”
Ivy felt a little swirl of apprehension amidst all the happiness. She’d heard the elders talking about the Dark Lives; the cat’s personality wasn’t affected, but they would be swallowed up by the Dark Life until they looked completely different, a manifestation of the growing evil. Dark Lives resided in all cats, and only manifested every hundred lifetimes. Most cats died or killed themselves before they were absorbed by the Dark Life, since it could take many moons, but the ones that survived turned evil and wandered the spirit plane, abducting just-killed souls for the army of the evil spirits. She had told Birch, and would have to tell her kits. Both litters, in fact. She planned to die before it consumed her, but wondered if she would go to StarClan or stay behind here.
•It doesn’t matter. I’ll be wherever my kits are, and wherever Birch is. When did I get this cold-blooded, thinking about my death like it’s nothing? I should be happy now, here with my family.•
Birch purred at the sight of little Deer stirring. He bumped into Flip and Flip blindly tumbled away, caught by surprise. She reached out with her tail and swept him closer.
“Were we ever like that?” Dawnstorm asked.
“Oh, yes. One time Mudpelt rolled out of the entire nursery since you pushed him.”
“You know, I kind of remember that,” Mudpelt said at the same time as Dawnstorm. They looked at each other as Birch laughed.
That night, the cats sprawled out across the floor of the underground den looked like a giant pile of fur. Cream, pale tan, black, white, brown, fawn. Ivy closed her eyes and curled her body around her tiny kits. •This is where StarClan has led me. This is where my destiny lies.•
