What’s better than a cozy mystery? A cozy mystery set in a bakery! At 27, Lyndsay has finally fulfilled her dream of opening Spice Isle Bakery in Brooklyn’s Little Caribbean neighborhood, inspired by the treats of her family’s Grenada homeland. Too bad the owner of the old-school Italian bakery down the street had to come in and spoil the good vibes of her opening day…and then get stabbed to death with a bread knife later. And to make matters worse, the local precinct cops just assume that Lyndsay did it! Author Olivia Matthews (who also publishes romance novels as Patricia Sargeant) surrounds her charmingly awkward amateur sleuth with great supporting characters, including Lyndsay’s super-supportive family—especially her feisty, crochet-loving grandma—and Bryce, the skeptical NYPD detective who happens to have been Lyndsay’s high school crush. The cozy equivalent of one of the currant-studded sweet rolls that are Lyndsay’s specialty—there’s a recipe at the end!— Against The Currant is a quick and tasty little snack.

A delicious read!
Against the Currant is an excellent start to a new series. Lyndsay and her family are well-rounded and interesting characters. Spice Isle Bakery and Little Caribbean are practically characters of their own. The author gives us multiple suspects and motives, which created a true whodunit? There were plenty of false leads to chase, but the end still felt satisfying. Also as a youngest child, I felt very connected to Lyndsay. I'm looking forward to the next book in this series.
