The action leaps around in time to illustrate the arc of Sapa's life, but focuses on 1936, when, as a septuagenarian, he plots to blow up the monuments on Mount Rushmore in time for a visit to the site by FDR to atone for his role in constructing the stone likenesses. Great history, slow pace...
The book is well written, and the storyline is very good. The problem is that it gets very depressing and lonely for a very long time. The conclusion of the book, however is fantastic. I wanted to add that I probably learned more about Lakota culture reading this book than I have from any other source. Simmons does a great job of putting you in the moment.
