On an alien world, the inbred descendants of a cop and a criminal grapple with their future, but predictability mars a solid concept. Teenager John Redlantern sees a future beyond waiting for voyagers from Earth to rescue the Family, but his battles against tradition and the elements lead to only minor losses, while technology is recreated too easily to be credible. Beckett (The Peacock Cloak) hews too closely to historical patterns, such as the change from communal matriarchy to aggressive territorial patriarchy. The use of multiple narrators is clever, as are creatures like singing leopards and the changes to English over generations, but it's not enough. The ending just confirms what readers will have suspected from early on the last in a long series of missed opportunities.

Great book!
This book is about growing up and becoming a leader. It's about soldiering on and fighting to get what you want. It's about pride. Its about honor. Its about having the courage do what you have to do even when you really don't want to. But most of all, its about exploring. I strongly recommend it.
Great potential but falls flat
I was recommended this book by a friend. I never heard any hype or anything but the reviews seemed to be good. Anyways the book started out slow and as quick as the pace picked up, is how quick it went slow again. The writer was descriptive enough were I could picture the planet but the story line was awful. I got to 65% and just said eff this book and purchased the girl on a train, which is a great book. I really wanted to like this book, :(
Dark Eden
I loved this book. I hope there is a book 2 on this story. I want to know if their followers found them. And, the number of things that could happen from where it left off.
