Publisher Description
I knew she was trouble from the moment I saw her. I felt it as she stood in the doorway that day: disaster. Not just because she was so different, that skin and that hair, as different from me as it’s possible to be. There was something wrong about her. Wrong for us. It was never going to work.
Now she is dead and only I am left to love him. She is dead, and it’s all my fault.
APPLE BOOKS REVIEW
There are, of course, two sides to every story. Rachel Edwards’ sharp British thriller underlines this truism to stunning effect as Lola (a complicated white teenager) and Darling (her new stepmother, who is black) clash in alternating chapters. Edwards’ compulsive storytelling snakes around corners, wrapping itself in layers of suspense until a venomous secret is exposed. Edwards was inspired to write her debut novel after being subjected to racist abuse in the wake of the EU referendum. Darling explores the shifting dynamics of Brexit Britain with confidence and consternation, making this a timely and very special read. The rising anger and frustrations that both her unforgettable protagonists experience are all too familiar.
