Publisher Description
The “dark, twisted, thought-provoking”* international bestseller—first in the series featuring Detective Helen Grace.
Two people are abducted, imprisoned, and left with a gun. As hunger and thirst set in, only one walks away alive.
It’s a game more twisted than any Detective Helen Grace has ever seen. If she hadn’t spoken with the shattered survivors herself, she almost wouldn’t believe them.
Helen is familiar with the dark sides of human nature, including her own, but this case—with its seemingly random victims—has her baffled. But as more people go missing, nothing will be more terrifying than when it all starts making sense....
*#1 New York Times bestseller Tami Hoag
PUBLISHERS WEEKLY
British author Arlidge's engrossing first novel, a crime thriller, introduces Det. Insp. Helen Grace of the Hampshire police. When a fiend abducts a young woman and her boyfriend and torments them in an ingeniously cruel way that leads to the death of one of them, Helen investigates, but before she can make any headway there is a second similar case, then a third. Helen believes there's a connection among the victims, but the only link she can see is that they were all acquaintances of hers. Helen is herself a severely damaged woman. Professional stress and a guilty family secret make her withdrawn and defensive in her personal life; her main relief comes from employing a professional dominator to whip her. Plot complications include Helen's detection of a mole within the department and her complex relationship with an otherwise talented subordinate who's sinking into debilitating alcoholism. Readers will look forward to seeing more of this strong, intelligent, and courageous lead.

Good book, just hyped up too much.
I was so excited to find this book on my front porch when I came home yesterday. I had been trying to either request it or win it. I had heard so much hype about it that I couldn't wait to read it.
While it was a weird and creepy book and I thoroughly enjoyed it, I have read better debuts that didn't get half the hype. Don't get me wrong, this is a pretty decent book and there are several jaw dropping moments and times you want to read it with your eyes closed (it can be retching for those with weak stomachs). It is very gripping and will hold your interest and I do recommend it. I just think it's a little overhyped.
Thanks W. Martin at Penguin Group and Net Galley for providing me with this free ARC in exchange for an honest review.
Could this be more of a Sharon Bolton rip off!
The basic plot is the same as the first Lacey Flint detective story ….. is no one writing anything original these days ? Apart from that the writings good and it moves at a quick pace but REALLY….and the end was disappointing. So, no.
Amazing!
This book kept me on the edge of my seat at the end of each chapter. The chapters are short, which I love because it kept my attention. The ending was crazy! I was so happy to see there are 2 more out and 2 more coming out soon! I love the Helen Grace series so far! Definitely recommend if you're into the Saw movies. They are kind of similar.
