Ted Chiang’s fantastical story collection insists that while technology can’t dim the human spirit, it can certainly complicate it. Chiang—who wrote the riveting short story that inspired Hollywood’s deeply affecting Arrival—has an inquisitive, philosophical approach to science fiction that’s on full display here. In one story, corporations have designed semi-anthropomorphic electronic pets, whose owners begin to instinctively treat them like children. In another, a civilization of sentient robots recognizes that its extinction is approaching. I love these stories and can’t wait to read more
Please Write More, Mr. Chiang
I wish more authors released books of short stories like this one. Every story reminded me a bit of a fable, with a lesson perhaps that Mr. Chiang was trying to impart. Not all of the stories resonated with me, as he does get into some technical writing which can read like an assembly manual at times. But I enjoyed this book immensely, and encourage readers of any variety to give his writing a try. It’s compelling reading.
Beautiful
Most of these stories are beautiful craftsmanship. I rarely take the time to review a book let alone write something about it. But this one deserves recognition.
