God Wears Many Skins

The Sami are the indigenous peoples of Europe's far north, pursuing a migratory life with herds of reindeer. They offer a rich storytelling tradition passed down from thousands of years of shamans, who recite the history of the peoples from memory while pounding on a large drum and singing to a distinctive four-beat rhythm. This poem attempts to capture some of the atmosphere of this performance.
