Warriors: Omen of the Stars #1: The Fourth Apprentice

(This is my first Warriors fanfic don’t judge plz)

“All cats old enough to catch their own prey, gather beneath the high rock for a clan meeting!” Rang out Tumblestar’s call from the high rock. Copperfang padded up to where the rest of the clan was gathering. Tension hung in the air like a storm brewing. “Our former deputy has gone to walk with our Warrior ancestors, so by the warrior code, I must appoint a new deputy before moonhigh. I say these words before the spirit of Sparrowfoot, may he and the rest of Starclan hear and approve of my choice……Copperfang, will be the new deputy of Duneclan.

Copperfang froze, her head spun. What an honor to be chosen as deputy! Surely a more senior warrior would be a better fit? Her mate Dovesong walked up to her and nuzzled her comfortingly, rubbing her pelt against Copperfang, calming her down. She Trotted to the bottom of the high rock and proudly took her place at the bottom of the rock, still a bit shocked but more confident now.

“PATROLS!” She called, her voice echoing around the camp for everyone to hear. “Frogfoot, Dotnose, and your apprentices can go on the hunting patrol.” The two apprentices bounced in excitement. “Berrystripe, Vinewhisker, Honeyfoot, and Conestep, you can do the border patrol.” After she had finished speaking the patrols headed out of the bramble entrance. “Come Copperfang, I would like to speak to you..” spoke Tumblestar. Copperfang jumped at his unnoticed approach and she felt embarrassed that she hadn’t known he was there. The deputy and leader entered the den. “Copperfang, you know I am on my last life, right?” Copperfang shook her head, she hadn’t and this came as a shock. “Well, I need to trust in my decision to make you the deputy… right now I am still unsure…” He said, age showing in his expression. “Me too Tumblestar, I am slightly questioning your decision, there are other warriors that might’ve been better options…. Like Vinewhisker, or Honeyfoot.” She admitted. “Yes but… I worry about their strong ambitions and how they will lead the clan when it is their turn…” he spoke in a dull tone. Copperfang could tell that he didn’t like talking about this. Her thoughts were abruptly cut off by a yowl of distress at the camp entrance. “MY KITS!!! THEY’RE DEAD!” (More will be coming soon in this series. Btw sorry if it was short but it’s 12:00am in the morning) **edit: yes Copperfang is lesbian. She is a female with a female mate, deal with it >:(

“Oh, sorry!” the stranger said, sounding mortified. “I wasn’t watching where I was going, and— oh, you’re an apprentice.” The pretty tabby looked down at Fadingpaw with bright, intelligent eyes. “In that case, then, have you seen Fallingpaw anywhere?”
Fadingpaw shook her head. “I don’t think so. I don’t know any Fallingpaws.”
The tabby’s whiskers twitched. “He ran off and now I can’t find him. Are you sure you haven’t seen him? He’s a small, energetic blur of blue and grey.”
“Oh, we have seen him!” Thrushpaw said before Fadingpaw matched the description to the apprentice they’d met earlier. “We left him with our friend, somewhere over there.”
“That’s nice to hear,” the tabby said with a relieved sigh. “I know I shouldn’t, but I get so nervous whenever he runs off somewhere. I don’t remember being so hyperactive when I was younger.”
Fadingpaw liked this friendly tabby, even though they had just met. She had quite a few questions for her, but was worried that they would be rude.
“We can take you to him if you’d like,” she said instead.
“He’s probably gone by now,” the she-cat mused. “It’s fine, though. Slatewhisker is always telling me not to worry, anyway.”
“What clan are you from?” Fadingpaw asked, which was a mistake. Then, all her questions came pouring out of her at once. “What’s your name? Is Fallingpaw your kit? Who’s Slatewhisker? Are you a good warrior? And—“
Thrushpaw thwacked her with a paw and Fadingpaw quieted down, ashamed. But to her surprise, the tabby answered all her questions without hesitation.
“My name’s Lotusfall, and I’m from RiverClan. You could say I’m a good warrior, but it’s . . . not something I really flaunt.” She paused, a pained look on her face, before she went on. “Slatewhisker’s my mate, and she’s that grey she-cat over there. And no, Fallingpaw isn’t my kit, but I do take care of him. I’m a bit like a mother to him, but also like his big sister. It’s hard to explain.”
“I understand it perfectly,” Fadingpaw said. Lotusfall’s story reminded her of finding Nightpaw and Cherrypaw.
Lotusfall looked down at her with an apologetic expression. “I’m sorry, but I have to go. Maybe we’ll get a chance to speak again at the next Gathering.”
“That’d be nice,” Fadingpaw told her, turning to leave. “It was nice meeting you, Lotusfall.”
“You as well, Fadingpaw. And you too, Thrushpaw.”
And with that, the cats split up; Fadingpaw and Thrushpaw to rejoin the WindClan cats, and Lotusfall to try and find her young charge.
And later, as all the clans settled down to hear the leaders speak, Fadingpaw couldn’t help but notice just how close Cherrypaw and Fallingpaw were sitting. Fadingpaw frowned.
I’ll talk to her about that later, she thought to herself.
Then, the leaders began to speak, and all thoughts about Cherrypaw and her new friend left her mind.

‘Ugh. Worst. Mentor. In. History.’
Secret’paw thought as she lumped onto a rock. She was staring down at the down where a grasshopper was running free, like a bunny.
She signed, ‘Why can’t Zebra’stripe have some respect to me? Not even a shred of it!’. Then her mother, Golden’leaf, had came up to her. “Who stuck a frog up your snout?” She spoke softly, “Zebra’stripe.” “Don’t blame you, oldest male in the clan and still has that grump to ‘em.
Reckon it will only get worse over moons.” Golden’leaf sneered, and snuck back into her cave.
