Iris Iggy

Icky Carrots contrasts the long and short “i” sounds. Miss I is trying to feed carrots to Iris Iggy, but she doesn’t like carrots. This is a great book for discussing the 5 senses as Iris Iggy rejects the feel, taste, smell, sight, and sound of carrots. Have fun exaggerating the short /i/ sound as Iris Iggy sticks out her tongue and says /iiii/ whenever carrots are present. Point to the letter and ask your child to make the /i/ sound. Contrast this with the long /i/ sound as she complains, “I do not like carrots.” Younger children can listen to words from the story and tell whether they hear Iris Iggy’s sound or Miss I’s sound. Older children can search for different spelling patterns that result in the long vowel as inn “like” or “Iris.”
