Cooper returns to top form in the third Highland Dragons paranormal Victorian romance (after The Highland Dragon's Lady). Lady Judith MacAlasdair is of the Highland Dragon blood and charged with supervising the family castle and the local village, Loch Arach. With plenty of tension, forward motion and lovely reveals
The first I have read, and it won’t be the last. Seriously, what’s not to like with Highlanders, Dragons, steamy attraction and a murder mystery in a late Victorian setting. Isobel Cooper has mixed genres, history and a solid set of twists to come out with a quick reading story that left me hungry for more.
William Arundell works for a secret branch of the English government (I love the feel of Torchwood here) that specializes in the paranormal and supernatural. There is a murderer on the loose, and William is investigating the case in the remote Highlands. Coming upon the MacAlasdairs and Judith in particular, she is one of the potential suspects.
But Judith has her own reasons for not being happy with the stranger in her area: a dragon shifter, secrecy and guarding the clan are imperative. There are, however, tales about the Lady in the Castle in the village, and it piques William’s curiosity.
A wonderful development of their relationship, with bits revealed and more to come around every turn. Plenty of suspects could be the murderer, so the mystery is well formed with enough suspects to keep you guessing and intrigued. With plenty of tension, forward motion and lovely reveals of secrets and relationships the story kept me engaged and anxious to know more. While I didn’t feel any great loss in not having read the earlier books, I do think this would have been a richer experience having read them, and can’t wait to read them as soon as I can.
