Linda Martin understands what is to be lonely: her parents died when she was young, and she was raised in an orphanage. When she is hired as a governess to the orphaned young Philippe, Comte de Valmy, Linda finds a kindred spirit in the lonely little boy.

But Philippe is the heir to a vast estate in Savoy, and his dangerously handsome uncle may be willing to kill to ensure that Philippe never inherits it . . .

Don't miss this thrilling, twisty tale of a dangerous romance set in the heart of mid-century Savoy from Mary Stewart, the Queen of Suspense - perfect for fans of Agatha Christie and Barbara Pym.

Almost Cinderella

You don’t get too far into this Mary Stewart before you pick up on the Cinderella vibes. I love the twisted mysteries from Stewart with their light-hearted romances. Good reading for a beach lounger or with your feet propped up on a mountain cabin railing.

Good summer read

I keep rereading Mary Stewart books all my life. They are familiar and comforting and good books for summer reading.

Read as a 13-year-old; tried again

I thought it would be good to go back to an old chestnut but alas, sigh, it’s pretty silly. All the highs and lows of a 19th century romance but written and set in the mid 20th century. If you like French fairy tales, it has all the elements except the enchanted pumpkin.
