Lies. Betrayal. Deceit. Welcome to Brookhaven, where nothing is ever what it seems... Don't miss this brand-new small-town mystery series from USA Today bestselling author Morgan James!
Ainsley Layne is running from something—or someone. Sheriff Dare Jensen can see it in the way she watches her surroundings, the way she flinches away from him every time he comes near. Though she tries to hide the shadows in her eyes, the dark bruises that riddle her body tell their own dark tale.
Dare knows that winning her trust won't be easy. She's been hurt too many times and, despite his offer of a safe haven, she refuses to confide in him. Until the killings begin…
When a young woman is found strangled to death and left posed on a park bench, the murder rocks the small town of Brookhaven. Coinciding so closely with Ainsley's arrival, Dare can't help but wonder… Is it a coincidence? Or is it somehow connected to the woman residing under his roof?

Frightening suspense
The main character is being essentially being held captive by a boyfriend that finds any excuse to beat her then repents and brings her roses. He has moved her away from family and friends. She became worried he was going to kill her after a particularly violent beating. She contacted a friend for help and escaped. He chased her and found her several times, but continued to evade him. She ended up in a small town and rented a room from the sheriff. He recognized her fear and trauma and worked to put her at ease to trust him. There is lots of intrigue, suspense, twists, turns and even some romance. I definitely recommend this book.
Too painful to continue
This has to be the dumbest sheriff to ever wear a badge. After the shooting and seeing her old injuries even a green cop could connect the dots. He gets shot at and doesn’t want to ask Ainsley who it was. Please! And it was what seemed like the tenth time that he “ground his molars” that I gave up. Over use of fist clenching, heart pounding and other bodily moods is way overdone.
