When he offers her the position of housekeeper, Amelia knows she must refuse. But for the sake of his children, she throws all caution to the wind….
A British spy, Simon Grenville is now playing both sides in a time of war, his goal to keep his sons safe. Yet when he is brought face-to-face with the woman he once loved, he realizes nothing about his feelings for Amelia has changed—if anything, they are even stronger. PUBLISHERS WEEKLY
Marked for execution in a French prison in 1794, British spy Simon Grenville agrees to pass information to the French in exchange for his freedom. Returning to his life in Cornwall as the earl of St. Just, Simon learns that his estranged wife has died in childbirth and his lovely, impoverished neighbor, Amelia Greystone, has stepped in to help care for his children. Amelia agrees to accompany Simon to London as his housekeeper because she loves the children and needs the money, but the attraction they felt 10 years earlier still burns. As their passion erupts, Simon tries to wiggle between the British and French governments and get out of the espionage business alive. Fans of the previous volume, Seduction, may find the opening act familiar, but James's lovers are sympathetic and likable, with good chemistry that will please readers. Dramatic, solid writing and atmospheric details make for an enjoyable read.
Customer Reviews
Repetitive
This was not a good read. There was very little romance, and although Amelia kept thinking how much she cared for Simon, he kept thinking how she is forever meddling.
Simon is too preoccupied with his brother's death and his family being in danger. While he has horrible nightmares about being found out as a spy, he sits around drinking and making lewd comments to Amelia, who he thinks is so trusting.
When Amelia sees him sneaking out in a disguise she comes to an immediate conclusion that he is a spy and grills him (nagging) to get him to confess. He lies over and over and she doesn't buy it. Then Simon decides it is time to tell her and she said she trusts him despite his repeated lies. Then she shares his secret (the one he thinks will end his life) with EVERYONE she encounters.
It was difficult to see how any of the romance developed, and even harder to finish.
Her mother was lost in the 2nd part of the book and I wonder why she was even part of it.
Not the best Joyce novel, and not worth my time or money.
This is a 1st for Joyce!
This is my least favorite book. The heroine was a simpering fool; I have never met a female like her in my life. I would never be her friend. The hero was also a weakling. Joyce normally has such strong characters I guess she wanted to change it up but, it didn't work out.
