Publisher Description
When fourteen-year-old Padmé Naberrie wins the election for Queen of Naboo, she adopts the name Amidala and leaves her family to the rule from the royal palace. To keep her safe and secure, she'll need a group of skilled handmaidens who can be her assistants, confidantes, defenders, and decoys. Each girl is selected for her particular talents, but it will be up to Padmé to unite them as a group. When Naboo is invaded by forces of the Trade Federation, Queen Amidala and her handmaidens will face the greatest test--of themselves, and of each other.

Worth it
I’m not far into my recent effort into reading the canon books but this was good read. I would say that Master and Apprentice was probably a bit more interesting just because the plot was a little more traditional but that’s not to say this read was boring. I had read on Amazon that Padmé and the other handmaidens were vastly over sexualized but I didn’t think that. I thought Johnston did a good job of building the backstory to each of the handmaidens too. It’ll be cool to watch Phantom Menace with this in mind. Overall, worth the time and money.
Obvious, crude, Fan fiction, doesn’t deserve acclaim.
Honestly the author seems to have done zero character research. Funny, because in the acknowledgements it describes how much research she did.
There’s a part where padme’s thinking about relationships and getting into one. Randomly, we bring up how it’s a normal thing on Naboo to be a single parent (I went back to episode one and every kid I saw had parents but who knows?)
We then bring up her sister as evidence, ‘cause she’s pregnant and not married. Spoiler alert: it’s on wookipedia, documentaries, DELETED SCENE FOOTAGE… all the places you should research when writing a book. Her sister actually IS married. (WOAH!!!) I mean, it’s kind of sweet that she wants to have a lasting relationship and all but get her family’s basic facts correct.
SPOILER AHEAD
Also, I have absolutely nothing against the community, but it seems like everyone accepts lesbianism as like this normal thing although we like never see it in the original movies? (Haven’t watched new ones lol) I wouldn’t mind one or two characters/references, but it’s brought up every. Other. Second. And it’s very annoying. Also, 12 year old girls and 16 year old girls do not fall in love with each other. That was just weird. I mean, if it was just a crush? Okay, fine, weird, but fine. But this whole on LOVE situation???
Other than everything in this book, lovely, recommend. But please buy it in paperback print just so that you can burn it for me?
